tv talk: FLESH AND BONE First (and second) impressions

Flesh and Bone Season 1 Episode 1 (And 2)

Spoiler zone

So I decided to comment on my overall First impressions on the mini series Flesh and Bone which consists of 8 episodes. I have been waiting for this to come out since the start of the year and let me tell you, After watching the first episode, I am not disappointed. It is one of those shows that releases the whole season in one go because thanks Netflix. If I'm not wrong, it's made by Starz.

First of all, I love its aesthetic. The theme song is beautiful as well as the clips that go with it. The title of each episode has a meaning to it and the title slide after the song contains a definition. I love that. The cinematography is beautiful. It's so atypical yet very short film - something you'd see at Sundance-esque. The lighting is cool toned with an emphasis on blue and it's very dark. It probably has to do with the harsh reality of the supposed glamorousness of ballerinas. Claire seems to have PTSD or depression, yet she composes herself and stays determined to follow her dream. I mean the other ballerina's have their own shit such as nymphomania and drug abuse and daddy issues I guess? (I'm talking about a stripper)

Here is spoiler zone so don't read if you don't want to be spoiled

Now, I have observations that I actually wrote down as I was watching (yes I am that invested).

  • First of all, I commented on the cinematography which I've already touched on.
  • The scene which Claire proves herself when auditioning for the company, we don't actually see her dancing, we see the Director's reaction.

I feel like this is the focus to portray his immediate liking for her the second he sees her. Also, we as the audience don't see what is so special about her yet. We just know she is.
WHAT MAKES HER SO GOOD BRUH

  • The nudity (as always) surprised me, I was just caught off by it, didn't expect it. Just thought I'd mention it, there are really intense sex scenes.
  • When she talked about her brother she seemed sad by it (didn't know what was coming at that point.
  • The condom wrapper. She looked at it with dismay, like about to cry. I was kind of confused, like was she assaulted? Did someone not use a condom with her and she had a baby and that's why she quit dancing for 3 years? Is taking out her feelings in her dancing her distraction? Is that why she's so good?

  • She likes books, shes's comforted by them and has to sleep with them.
Possibly they take her to a different place to again, distract her from reality.

  • The Director Paul is the funniest, he's also kind of messed up but he's hilarious.
  • There was that scene where the girl needed a tampon and she walks around holding a tissue to her vagina - this show is no joke so real and has no shame.
  • "I'm not crazy"

  • The guy from Center Stage who hasn't been in anything since Center Stage

  • The clothes they're wearing during classes - so cool and comfy and edgy chic. I love it. But if I was ever wearing casual clothes during ballet classes, my teacher would've killed me.
  • The exchange between Paul and Claire when she gets called out to do the Adagio on her own is ICONIC.

  • during it I was like 'lol if she messes up' but nah ofc she impresses him

  • Quote Paul "I say fuck me she's a star" and "Fuck that stale piece of shit" OMG I broke down he's amazing.
  • But she breaks down. Damaged goods I say.
  • She vomits, Kira takes drugs. They're all damaged goods. After Kira telling her that she's not special, I don't think Claire really cared, she was more worried about the negative parts of the day. When Claire stole her drugs I was thinking 'what does she think she's worthless?' Then later when Kira spots her drugs in Claire's bag (not sure if this is 1st ep or 2nd) I wasn't sure if Claire did it on purpose to show Kira she knew or so that Kira then thought Claire was following in her paths. I'm probably just dumb and missing something but Yeahh.
  • Also I'm liking Claire's friendship with Daphne, but I'm getting lesbian vibes from the way Claire looked at her as she was stripping. But then again it could just be awe. Idk there's lesbian sex everywhere these days I wouldn't be surprised.
  • FUCK THIS CLOSET THO
  • So I do believe Claire was assaulted because every time she's touched, she freaks out. (The 2nd episode was esp freaky because she took a pill so she wouldn't remember the night and then it didn't work for the sex part when sleeping with the president of the company or whoever he is hotshot, she purges herself so he becomes disgusted, you need to be really messed up to avoid sex like that)
  • She has pretty big tits for a ballerina though. Cudos.
And then we see it. Why she ran away from her brother. Why she avoided him. He was her abuser. That part made me sick. Not literally but ew.

I really like this show for all the extremities it goes to, the harsh realities, the love of dance and how
depressed everyone is even though I'm like 'smile a little ffs', oh well Paul's wit is enough for everyone I guess...
I will post a full season review with no spoilers - so it's less of a discussion, but maybe later I'll do more of a ranty one - once I've watched all 8 episodes, which won't take me long anyway HAHA.

And that's all for today. Good Show. Respect.
